how to start journaling

our thoughts are not facts.

throughout the day how often do you think things like "i'm not smart enough," "i'm not good at anything", "no one likes me"? these are not facts, but thoughts. without a space for reflecting on the track that's running through your head it's easy to fall into believing that these statements are true.

journaling provides that space and opportunity to identify these thoughts.

when we become aware of our thoughts, they have less control over us.
when we become aware of our patterns, we can choose to change the framework.
when we release the frenzy in our head onto the page it frees up space to have a deeper understanding of how we actually feel.

BUT WHAT DO YOU JOURNAL ABOUT?

i like to write a gratitude and affirmation list daily. if i'm feeling a lot of big feels i'll just stream of consciousness freehand and see what's released - sometimes it's angry and heat of the moment words, sometimes it's poetry that i had no idea was sitting on my heart. journal prompts are helpful especially if you're still unsure about what questions to ask yourself, swipe through and SAVE this post for a list of my favorites.

HOW DO YOU STAY CONSISTENT?

this might surprise you but i don't necessarily think you need to focus on being consistent. use it as a tool. sometimes the tool you need is meditation, sometimes it's a long walk and sometimes it's journaling. i've stayed consistent with daily journaling this year because it feels really good to release in that way right now. i’m aware of how much better I feel, so i’ve made it a part of my routine.

WHEN DO YOU JOURNAL?

mornings are powerful to help you set the tone for the day ahead. afternoons are an amazing pick me up to reset intentions. evenings are beautiful for reflecting. every sunday is the perfect time for you to check in before a new week. the first of the month can be a great time to set intentions. aka journal when it feels right for you! you can create a ritual around it. pour your favorite cup of tea. light a candle. put on a soothing playlist. create a space that feels loving and welcoming and see what comes up.

do you have a journaling practice?
